Plan for the Evening, Not Just the Day

Most gardens are designed around how they look at midday, when the borders are bright and everything is at its best. But the hours you actually have free to enjoy them usually fall after six o'clock, when the light softens, the temperature drops and the garden becomes a different place altogether. Designing for evening use means shifting your priorities: less about colour schemes, more about comfort, visibility and warmth.

The encouraging part is that very little of this needs a major overhaul. You do not have to dig up a lawn or rebuild a patio. What you need is a clear route to your seating area, a reason to linger once you are there, and enough shelter and heat to stop the evening ending early.

Light in Layers, Not Floodlights

A single bright light fixed to the back of the house is the most common mistake. It flattens the garden, throws harsh shadows across the lawn and destroys the very atmosphere that makes an evening outside so appealing. Think in layers instead, each one doing a different job.

• Low-level path lighting: bollards, spike lights or recessed deck lights that mark the route from the door to the seating area without lighting up the whole garden.
• Uplighting: one or two fixtures at the base of a tree, a wall or a large shrub, angled upwards, give depth and structure for very little money.
• Table light: a rechargeable lantern or a candle in a storm glass on the table makes the seating area feel like a room rather than a patch of paving.
• String lights: draped along a fence top or a pergola, these fill the middle distance and soften the edges of the space.

Colour temperature matters more than brightness. Choose warm white, roughly 2700K or lower, which flatters planting and skin tones. Anything labelled cool white or daylight will make the garden look clinical and slightly blue. Keep light sources below eye level and shield them so you see the lit surface rather than the bulb itself. Solar stake lights are tempting, but in a British winter they are unreliable; rechargeable or mains-powered fittings will not let you down in October.

Cut the Wind and the Evening Lasts Longer

Wind, far more than temperature, is what drives people back indoors. A still evening at 12°C feels considerably more pleasant than a breezy one at 16°C. Shelter should therefore be your first investment, ahead of any heater.

In most UK gardens the prevailing wind comes from the south-west, so watch where it funnels between buildings and along boundaries. A slatted screen, a section of trellis with a climber, a run of tall planters or a mature hedge will all break the flow. Permeable barriers work better than solid ones, because they filter the wind rather than forcing it over the top and down into your seating area. If you have space for a pergola, planting it with a climbing rose, wisteria or jasmine gives you dappled shade in summer and a genuine windbreak after dark. Position your chairs with their backs to the wind and you will gain an hour or more of comfortable sitting.

Get the Seating Right

Metal furniture looks lovely in a catalogue and feels cold within ten minutes of sunset. Timber, rattan and woven synthetic materials hold far less chill, and deep seats with backs and arms encourage you to settle rather than perch. If you use cushions, keep them in a waterproof storage box beside the seating, not in a shed at the far end of the garden, or you will simply stop bothering.

Proximity matters too. A beautiful bench at the bottom of a long lawn will be used far less than a modest one ten paces from the back door. If you want two seating areas, make the second a genuinely short walk away, and light the route between them.

A Reliable Source of Warmth

A fire bowl, chiminea or fire pit turns an evening outside into an occasion, and the radiant heat is far more effective than a patio heater because it warms people rather than air. Site it on a hard, level, non-flammable base such as paving or gravel, well clear of fences, overhanging branches and anything else that could catch. Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby, and never burn treated timber or damp wood, which spits and smokes.

If smoke is a problem, or your garden is small, a gas patio heater positioned to one side works well, as does a simple basket of wool blankets. The blankets are often the single most effective purchase you will make.

The Details That Keep You Out There

• Somewhere to put a glass: small side tables or wide armrests, so nobody balances a drink on the ground.
• Evening scent: night-scented stock, tobacco plant, honeysuckle and jasmine all release fragrance after dusk, when the garden needs it most.
• Sound: a small water feature masks traffic and neighbourly noise, and its movement catches the light.
• A lit route indoors: the path back to the kitchen should be obvious without a torch.

None of these changes is dramatic on its own. Together, though, they turn a garden that closes at dusk into one you can use until midnight.
