Start With a Tape Measure, Not a Catalogue

Before you fall for a pretty bistro set online, spend ten minutes in your courtyard with a tape measure. Small outdoor spaces are unforgiving: a table that is 5cm too wide can make the difference between a usable seating area and a daily obstacle course. Measure the full width and depth, then note where doors open, where drainpipes sit and where the sun actually falls during the day. As a rule of thumb, leave at least 60cm of clear walking space between furniture and walls, and 75cm behind any chair you plan to pull out.

Sketch a simple plan on paper — graph paper works well — and mark the fixed elements. You will quickly see which shapes suit your courtyard. Long, narrow spaces usually welcome a slim bench or a row of folding chairs, while square plots often take a small round table more gracefully than a rectangular one. Getting this right first saves you money and returns precious floor space.

Furniture That Folds, Stacks and Hangs

The best small-courtyard furniture is the kind that disappears when you are not using it. Three categories do most of the heavy lifting.

• Foldable chairs. Look for models that fold flat rather than chunky director-style seats. Timber slatted chairs and powder-coated aluminium versions both fold to a few centimetres deep, so they can slide behind a door or hang on a hook. Check the folding mechanism feels solid; cheap hinges are the first thing to fail.
• Bistro sets. A two-seater bistro table, ideally 60–70cm across, is the classic courtyard solution. Round tops are kinder to tight corners than square ones. Some sets have a folding table plus two folding chairs that nest together, which is ideal if you only dine outside occasionally.
• Wall-mounted benches. A bench fixed to a wall or fence takes up almost no floor space and creates a permanent seating spot. Look for fold-down designs that hinge flat against the wall when not in use. Fixings matter here — use masonry bolts into brick, or coach screws into solid timber posts, never just screws into a fence panel.

If you have a little more room, a slim storage bench doubles as seating and a home for cushions, secateurs and a watering can. That combination of functions is gold in a courtyard.

Materials That Cope With British Weather

Our climate is the real test: damp winters, sudden downpours and the occasional frost. Choose materials that shrug all of it off.

• Teak and acacia. Both are naturally oily hardwoods that age to a soft silver-grey. They need no treatment, though a light oil each spring keeps the colour warmer.
• Powder-coated aluminium. Light enough to move single-handed, rust-proof and available in every colour from charcoal to sage. Ideal for folding chairs you will shift daily.
• HDPE rattan. Synthetic woven furniture looks like rattan but will not crack or fade. It is heavier than aluminium, so it suits a bench or a set you leave in place.
• Recycled plastic. Increasingly stylish, completely weatherproof and easy to wipe down. A strong choice for families.

Steer clear of untreated softwood and mild steel unless you are prepared to cover or store them. Even then, they rarely last more than a few seasons in a shaded courtyard where moisture lingers.

Match the Furniture to Your Garden Style

Small spaces reward a clear look. A courtyard that mixes five styles feels cluttered fast, so decide on a mood before you buy.

For a cottage feel, choose painted timber in soft greens or creams, pair it with terracotta pots and let climbers soften the walls. For a contemporary courtyard, slim powder-coated aluminium in charcoal or black, a round bistro table and a few large, simple planters create a calm, uncluttered look. If you love a Mediterranean vibe, go for warm-toned acacia or teak, add gravel underfoot and use olive or rosemary in pots — the furniture colour should echo the stone and the sunshine.

Whatever the style, keep the palette tight. Two materials and two colours is plenty in a courtyard, and repeating them around the space makes it feel deliberately designed rather than simply full.

Storage and Care in a Tight Space

The hidden advantage of foldable furniture is storage, but only if you plan for it. A waterproof storage box, a slim bench with a lift-up lid or even a set of sturdy hooks on a sheltered wall will keep cushions dry and stop chairs blowing about in winter gales.

Cushions deserve special attention. Buy ones with removable, washable covers, and bring them indoors during wet spells — no cushion survives a British autumn left out overnight. Store timber furniture under cover or with a breathable cover rather than plastic, which traps condensation. A quick wipe-down each spring, a check of bolts and hinges, and a touch of oil on hardwood will keep everything sound for years.

Finally, think vertically. A wall-mounted bench, a folding shelf for drinks and a hook for a lantern all free up the floor and make your courtyard feel larger than its measurements suggest. With the right pieces, even a three-metre square can become the most-used room in the house.
